How to Prepare Your Child for Sleepaway Camp

Sending your child off to sleepaway camp is a big step for both of you! But before you drop them off, there are a few things you should know. Whether this is their first time away or they’re an experienced camper, a little preparation goes a long way.

Camp Walden makes safety a top priority, but it never hurts to have a quick chat with your camper before they go. Remind them to always stick with a buddy and listen to their camp counselors. These may seem like simple requests, but hearing it from you will help it really stick. It’ll show that you want them to have the best (and safest) experience!

One of the most common struggles that many kids face when coming to camp is homesickness. Missing home is a perfectly normal reaction, especially for first-time campers. But don’t let those anxious feelings keep your kid from experiencing some of the most memorable summer adventures! The best way to ease their worries is to give them space to tell you how they feel. Letting them open up will help validate their emotions and give you the opportunity to reassure them and build their confidence.

It’s also good to explain how communication works at camp, staying in touch isn’t quite the same as it is at home. Let your child know that you won’t be able to talk every day, but you’ll be sending letters, and you can’t wait to hear all about their adventures when they get home. At Camp Walden, one of the highlights of the day is mail call, letters from home are handed out during evening “punch and cookies”, making it a special moment your camper will look forward to. Setting those expectations ahead of time can help them feel more secure and connected, even from a distance.

A great way to build excitement for camp is by making the packing process part of the fun! Use it as an opportunity to pack together and talk about all the adventures they’ll have. Show them the shoes they’ll be playing sports in or the swimsuit they’ll wear while they cannonball into the water. Paint a picture of all the exciting things they’ll get to do while they’re away!

Going away for the summer can be a big emotional milestone for both you and your child. But with a little preparation and encouragement, it becomes an opportunity for growth, independence, and adventure. At Camp Walden, your camper will get the chance to explore new interests, make lifelong friends, and build confidence in a fun, supportive environment. With just a bit of prep, they’ll head off feeling excited and ready for an unforgettable summer. When they come home full of smiles and stories, you’ll know it was all worth it.

diversity, equity, inclusion

Walden understands that a relevant camp community requires the harmonies of many voices—not only those that inspire, but also those that instruct and challenge. We strive to be a camp where diversity is celebrated and supported, and where each camper and staff member is provided the resources and opportunities to succeed. Our mission of teaching empathy and respect is incomplete if it only serves those who think and look like we do. We believe that our camp can be anyone’s camp, and that our greatest strength lies therein.

Walden is an Equal Opportunity Employer that hires qualified staff regardless of their race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, veteran status or any other basis covered by appropriate law.
