Camper cabins
Our 32 camper cabins feature between six and eight bunk beds each, as well as built-in shelves for camper personal belongings. All cabins have electricity and bathrooms with showers, toilets and sinks. Cabins have operable windows, exhaust fans and heaters (for those chilly Up North nights!)
Dining Room, a.k.a. Mess Hall
The newest iteration of the Walden Mess Hall is a 2016-2017 remodel that expanded our kitchen workspace, vaulted the ceilings and added six new restrooms. The new Mess Hall features a raised wooden deck overlooking the Meadow.
Health Center (a.k.a. Infirmary)
Walden’s health center stocks over-the-counter medications for basic ailments, as well as examination and first-aid supplies and equipment. Each week, a new doctor resides on-site at Walden. Doctors and Camp Health Officers (CHOs) live in the health center (affectionately still referred to as the Infirmary) and rotate “on-call” every night. Three rooms with multiple beds are reserved for campers who are unwell or simply need to rest. Doctors see campers at a formal “sick call” after breakfast and dinner, and CHOs deliver mealtime medications to campers at the Mess Hall. Walden is a 15-minute drive from the McLaren Northern Michigan-Cheboygan Emergency Room.
The Camp Store
Waldmart is located at the back of the office and carries Walden logo items, such as water bottles, teddy bears, magnets, socks, etc. The store is open a few times a week at Twilight, from 7-8 p.m.
Waterfront
Walden’s expansive shoreline on Long Lake buzzes with activity from morning through Twilight. With six motor boats, including four Mastercrafts, our staff pull hundreds of skiers, wakeboarders and tubers each day. Kayakers, canoers and stand-up paddleboarders glide across the lake’s clear, spring-fed waters, and sailors learn to tame the summer breezes in our fleet of modern Sunfish. Campers bait hooks most mornings and evenings for catch-and-release fishing, too. Swim instruction, lap swimming and open swim are daily offerings.
Riding Stables
Our on-site stables allows Walden to offer a robust riding program for beginning to intermediate riders. Camp maintains several rings for English-saddle lessons and groomed trails on camp property for Western rides.
Playground
A colorful Landscape Structures Evos playground replaced the old Walden playground in 2015. The playground provides safe, unstructured fun for sliding, spinning, swinging, climbing and just hanging out!
Where do you go if it rains?
Our indoor A/B activity spaces double as refuges for rainy-day fun. Besides the Mess Hall, campers will gather in the Arts & Crafts building, Rec Hall, Gymnastics Room, Radio Room/Lounge, Gameroom and Nature Nook.
